Biomonitor Overview
Biomonitor: Actiwatch
Purpose:
Sleep Duration, Sleep Patterns
What it Measures:
- Measures sleep wake cycles continuously over time
- Light sensor – records light level where you are located
- Off-wrist sensor – detects when removed from wrist
- Event marker (click button when going to sleep and upon waking)
Frequency of use:
All seven days of study participation
Charging Source:
No need for charging during study
How to tell if it’s working ok:
If time is displayed on face of watch
Wearing in water?
OK to wear while bathing/showering up to 30 min
Biomonitor: SpaceLabs Blood Pressure Monitor
Purpose:
Blood Pressure
What it Measures:
Measures Blood Pressure every 30 min (60 min at night) by inflating
Frequency of use:
One working day and one non-working day
Charging Source:
AA Batteries – provided
How to tell if it’s working ok:
If Blood Pressure readings are taken regularly. Some error codes are normal
Wearing in water?
Remove when bathing/showering
Biomonitor: SL Holter Monitor
Purpose:
Heart Rate
What it Measures:
- Measures heart rate and heart rate variability continuously by ECG
- Event marker (click button when you experience something stressful)
Frequency of use:
All seven days of study participation
Charging Source:
No need for charging during study
How to tell if it’s working ok:
If it is firmly attached to your chest and light shows green briefly when you click the event button
Wearing in water?
OK to wear while showering; face away from water. Do not wear while bathing or swimming. Contact study team if you are bathing or swimming and must remove Holter
What we are not recording
❌ No GPS location. These monitors cannot tell us where you are located.
❌ No sound, voice, or audio. These monitors are not recording what you say.
❌ No video. These monitors are not recording video.
❌ No information about what activities you are doing. The monitors record heart rate, blood pressure, and movement, but we cannot tell whether you are dancing, doing dishes, talking to friends, etc. We can’t use the monitors to identify any specific activity. You will be asked to share a few general details about your activities in the daily surveys, but the biomonitors cannot detect this information.
❌ No information about what substances you are using/taking. The monitors cannot detect anything you consume or use, including food, medicine, alcohol, tobacco, and any other substance.
❌ No information not listed in the table above.
❌ We cannot detect whether you are wearing the monitors remotely during your study participation. We will only know if you have worn the monitors once you return them to us.
❌ The monitors are not Wi-fi, Data, or internet-connected.
